As 2016 slides to a close it’s very easy to fall into the cliches of doom and tragedy. I’m not playing down the disgusting woes of the year: the huge loss of lives around the world, the slide to autocratic dictatorship in many countries, and the rise of narrow insular nationalism. However, it’s not anyone else’s responsibility to make me happy, it’s my personal responsibility to find my own happiness. True fulfilment, contentment and insight are not found in wielding power over others, but found in taking control of our own minds.
So in the midst of Brexit, Trump, Putin, Syria and all the other narrow-minded nastiness being heaped on the world I try to find the moments of peace. The small moments of purity untainted by the avarice of others are the most valuable things we have in this world. I painted the Surya Ravi Mudra in recognition of the need for inner peace before we can achieve peace elsewhere.
The Surya Ravi Mudra is practised to bring about positive change, energy, health and balance. Positive changes begin with self.
